It’s a “health spa for the mind”. Patients don’t have to be sick or “crazy” in order to seek out therapy. Sometimes life just gets in the way and you can find yourself in a rut, unable to cope, and just generally not feeling like yourself.
Our compassionate and experienced team of mental health professionals are prepared to deal with any of your problems - big or small - in a comprehensive and unbiased manner. Our aim is not to change you, the patient, but rather to help discover and enhance your authentic self and find out what is standing in the way of your dreams and realizations.
People enter therapy when some aspect of their emotional life becomes too painful or problematic, and self attempts to remedy their problems have been ineffective. Individual therapy involves first a detailed and accurate assessment of the problem. This often includes administration and interpretation of various psychological tests for diagnostic purposes.
These assessments can determine whether a patient may have a mental health disorder such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder that is caused by an organic physical cause such as a chemical imbalance in the brain and which may require psychotropic medication. In such cases the patient is referred to a psychiatrist or family physician for psychotropic medication management.
In other cases, medication is not required but the patient may require therapy sessions aimed at learning better coping skills to deal with stress, setting interpersonal boundaries and letting go of a painful past. A patient’s treatment plan will often include techniques based on cognitive-behavioral, client-based or mindfulness therapy. Research has shown that often medication in conjunction with psychotherapy can render optimal outcomes.
Don’t let fear or shame stop you from getting help.
Statistics show that most patients start feeling better even after the first session. Be ready to grow and heal through the trust and support that develops through the therapeutic relationship. You will be heard, you will be validated, and you will not be judged in your sessions. We at Peace River Psychology Center are a happy bunch and we want you to be able to look at life with a sense of humor. Nobody is perfect and the only thing we require of our patients is that they want to get well in body, mind and spirit.
